Q: What format should my artwork be in?

A: We recommend vector based artwork created with Adobe Illustrator (.ai or .eps) or Corell Draw (.cdr). Pixel or raster images will also work if the resolution is above 300 dpi, but vector art is preferable.

Q: Will engraving my Apple product void my warranty?

A:No, engraving is considered cosmetic rather than a modification that would change the behavior or performance of your laptop. Depending on the Apple Genius you deal with, you may have to argue the point; but this argument has already been won and documented at Make Magazine’s website. Contact your local Apple service company for their policy. Visit the official warranty page for more information: http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/hardware.html.

Q:Will laser engraving on products from other companies void my warranty?

A:This will depend on the company, their policies, and the company representative. If you have any doubts, please contact the manufacturer of your product before getting your device engraved.

Q: Is laser engraving permanent?

A:Yes, but a new display case or lid can be installed by a certified Apple technician for a reasonable price.

Q:How does the laser work?

A:On anodized aluminum (like the Nano, Powerbook, Macbook Pro, Iphone, and Ipod Mini) the laser removes the anodized coating to reveal the raw aluminum. On stainless steel (most iPods other than minis), the laser fuses a special treatment to produce a sharp black contrast to the polished stainless steel. On plastics (most laptops and mobile phones) the top layer is removed to reveal the layer below, which is usually a lighter color.

Q: What style of artwork works best?

A: On aluminum and most plastics, the artworks tends to appear lighter than the background, but shifts to a darker tone depending on the angle at which it’s viewed. We recommend high contrast style art (vector, woodcut, pen drawing, etc). On stainless steel, the image is always darker than the background. With this process, complex high contrast images can be engraved with good results.

Q: How long does the process take?

A: For single devices, we offer same-day turnaround, on multiple items, we will provide an estimated ETA.

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are located in SE Portland, Oregon. If you would like to make an appointment, please send us an email.

Q: Do you accept mail orders?

A: Yes, we recommend shipping your device in the original packaging if possible, fully insuring the package, and including a return mailing label. Please note that art must be approved before shipping.

Q: What are your hours?

A: We are currently by appointment only, contact us to set up an appointment.
